Making It w/ @makeupby_ yolanda
Makeup artist, mother, wife and activist Yolanda Terrazas started taking makeup seriously six years ago right after giving birth to her son. She was struggling with postpartum depression and looking for more purpose outside of being a wife and a mom. According to the American Pregnancy Association, over 70% of all mothers experience negative emotions after birthing their baby and finding strong emotional support has been said to reduce a mother’s risk(s). Yolanda found emotional support in her family and a creative outlet in her makeup artistry. She started watching YouTube videos and practicing makeup looks on herself everyday. “I realized that I was getting better and that I wasn’t as sad anymore. Makeup easily became my escape...felt therapeutic to me.” Six years later, after sharing both her story and talent online, Yolanda boasts 40,000 followers on Instagram and 56,000 on TikTok.
The 23-year-old, Mexican-American influencer incorporates the bright colors often associated with her culture into her mesmerizing, makeup looks. She’s also inspired by nature and animals especially when she’s experiencing a creative block. Yolanda developed her most recent idea while “sheltering-in-place” thanks to the original works of another TikToker. ‘“Matching my makeup to my hair clips” was inspired by @tochiology’s “matching my makeup to my scrunchies”. I’m proud to say I’ve gained over 10,000 new followers because of my new series.”’ Yolanda’s passion doesn’t stop at family or beauty - it extends to the climate and social justice.
In addition to raising awareness about ICE detaining innocent families and children, she’s taken a stand for #BlackLivesMatter and women’s rights. She continues to trail-blaze as a woman of color in the beauty industry due to her talent and transparency. Yolanda shared that creating her platform has definitely been one of the hardest things she’s ever had to do. “I inspire my followers to create and I help them with whatever they’re going through. It’s in these moments that I’m reminded why I’m never going to quit!”
Yolanda has been providing makeup services for over two years. While she started dabbling in makeup almost ten years ago, she’s grateful to be invested and seeing the fruits of her labor now. “Sometimes I wish I would’ve taken it seriously sooner, but I believe everything happens for a reason and God’s timing is ALWAYS right!” Her looks are often inspired by nature and animals especially when she’s experiencing a creative block. This was actually supposed to be her most creative and successful year yet seeing as she had booked seven weddings as an on-site makeup artist. Nevertheless, she still believes that everything happens for a reason.
Time with family and creating new content continue to motivate Yolanda to keep going. “I want to see how far I can make it!”
